Solomon Islands Tsunami Warning Debrief Seminar
On Monday 2 April 2007 (AEST) a magnitude 8.0 earthquake in the Solomon Islands region generated a tsunami for which the Australian Bureau of Meteorology< issued a number of warnings covering the coast of Queenslend and the east coast of Australia in general. The responses of emergency management authotities failed to address the potential danger and general chaos was evident in the effected population. On Wednesday 4 April a seminar was held at the Bundaberg Campus of CQU to provide a debrief of the situation to the community.
To conduct research into, and promote scientific and public awareness of, natural seismic activity in the Central Queensland region.
- Establish seismic monitoring stations to detect, quantify and locate earthquakes that occur in the region.
This is accomplished through the North Burnett Seismic Network (NBSN).
- Performing seismic shaking vulnerability surveys or urbanised centres in the Central Queensland region.
- Development and improve non-invasive seismic shaking vulnerability survey methodologies.
- Collaborating with other Australian seismic researchers, State and Federal bodies, to exchange and disseminate data.
